Throughout my JO career, there were few (if any) gymnasts that I took inspiration from to develop my own gymnastics. The noteworthy exception was Mitch Gaylord. I don't think I even saw a video of him until college, but my coach would talk about him and his two namesake releases and I became infatuated with them, to the degree that I wanted to make my own version one day. My idea original idea was a gaylord 2 to el grip (That was my first year level 10, my shoulders were still semi-flexible and the only release I could do was an A value straddle cut catch, but a kid can dream🤣). Fast forward 6 years to college; my interest in the Gaylord style releases was rekindled, and I finally had the physical ability to develop that interest. In one year, I learned every variation I could, and at the pinnacle of it all, actually managed to develop my own version of the Gaylord 1. Although that skill was my peak accomplishment, each one of these skills were just as satisfying to catch for the first time, and I'm grateful that I was able to train them to the degree that i did. 🎶strobelite- Gorillaz🎶 #godawgswoof #gymnastics #highbar
